Invasive Species Creativity Contest
Last Friday, the students were asked to think about what an invasive species was and do some preliminary research about one or a few species (plant and/or animal) that has invaded Ontario.
I was so impressed by how many of the students took on the task so enthusiastically. This morning, I was met by a number of them eager to tell me about what they had learned about invasive species over the weekend. I even asked Mrs. Nimigan to join the sharing and discussion this morning.
From our discussion, the students realized how this topic tied into our Social Studies unit - foreign trade and imports.
Below is a link to the Invasive Species Centre and from that site more information can be found about the Creativity Contest.
The contest is optional, however, many students expressed interest in participating.
For our Social Studies unit, students will conduct small research projects on an Ontario invasive species and present their findings.

New Communication Technology
The Halton District School Board has instituted two new forms of communication for students, teachers, and parents. Although I don't use it for communication this year with my class, some teachers at the school are now using Edsby. Events and information about the school as a whole are also being shared this way.
As of last week, the Board no longer uses First Class Chatt for email. Everyone student in the Board has a school email address and it has been automatically transferred to the Google/Gmail platform. Their email address remains exactly the same, including the @hdsb.ca portion.
Now students can use one account for their email and Halton Cloud activities. If they haven't been utilizing their Cloud account already, they should get into the habit as it will ease many frustrations. They can have access to all of their work done in the Cloud or saved to the Cloud, on any device as they as they have access to the Internet.
Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Super Bowl Ads and Media Literacy
When watching ads on TV, observing print ads in magazines, newspapers, and on posters, or listening to jingles on the radio, think:
- Who is the intended audience for this ad?
- What is the purpose?
- What techniques are used and how successful were they?
Here's a link to some of the 'best' Super Bowl ads from 2016: Click here
